Using ArcPad
This 1 day course provides a functional overview and hands on experience using ArcPad and associated hardware.
You are introduced to the ArcPad interface and guided through some of the common issues that are encountered whilst field mapping with GIS, including hardware constraints of Windows CE and Mobile devices and hand held GPS units.
Practice sessions are based on local Australian data.You will learn about -
- Display a variety of data
- Connect a GPS and display position
- Navigate to known features
- Capture point, line and polygon data with and without GPS input
- Create simple data input forms using ArcPad’s Quick Form Wizard
- Learn how to create an ArcPad Photo Layer
- Learn how to use the ArcPad snapping rules for data editing
- Verify and maintain existing data
- Use the ArcMap tools available for taking data to and from ArcPad
- Use ArcMap’s new Export Symbology tools to transfer ArcGIS symbology to ArcPad
- Identify the issues surrounding data integration
- Use Basic GPS operational procedures
- Use Windows CE and Windows Mobile features
Learning methods -
- Instructor lead presentations of the topics and concepts using ArcPad in a series of live demonstrations.
- Practice sessions; each student receives a work book that guides them through ArcPad activities.
- Questions and discussions
This ArcPad course is a stimulating and rewarding experience. There is a good mix of instructor presentation and practice sessions so that you can make the most out of the day. The atmosphere is informal and friendly providing the ideal learning environment.

This is the standard ESRI Australia course. The practice sessions were developed in Australia and adhere to the usual ESRI training standards.
Prerequisites -
This course is for trainees with a basic understanding of GIS. Trainees should also be familiar with Microsoft Windows and Windows Mobile or CE.
Trainees are asked to bring a Field/Mobile device (PDA/UMPC/Laptop) with ArcPad and GPS, if you have one.
