Safety and Compliance

Performing a job safety analysis (JSA) is standard practice for field technicians. These typically take the form of paper forms with check boxes and issues that need to be considered at a job site.

Computer assisted JSAs have a number of benefits over paper based forms. Digital JSAs are primarily wizard based processes which lead technicians through a series of questions. The answers to the questions will determine whether more or less questions are asked for each topic. This means the digital JSA can seem less daunting than a large paper form with lots of check boxes. For example, if the operator answers no to the question, “is there a public road near the site?”, then there is no need to show the questions and prompts that relate to traffic management issues.

A computer based JSA can also be used to control the process, for example if the technician or supervisor answers “yes” to the question “are there live overhead powerlines” then the system will not let them proceed to the next steps. Instead they are advised on the steps that must be taken to deal with live overhead powerlines.

Real time reporting

Work activities are recorded by field staff as the work progresses. What, how much and when the data is recorded is different for each business but might include completion status, condition assessments or construction phase. It may also include very specific asset details such as depth and diameter, construction materials and work duration.  This data is automatically uploaded to significantly improve timely access to information for office workers back at base allowing them to monitor, manage and also respond to customer enquiries.

Introducing a digital system avoids the need to shuffle paper in the field and in the office and ensures that each piece of captured data can be used for multiple purposes instead of being lost in a pile of paper on someone’s desk.


Sharing the knowledge

Many asset management organisations rely heavily on the intimate knowledge of key personnel.  This compromises flexibility in deploying work crews to different areas and risks loss of corporate knowledge on the departure of those personnel.  Information systems allow critical asset information to be recorded in a database so that it can be easily accessed when it’s needed by the people who need it.  Adding information about the location of assets adds another dimension making it possible to find them accurately.
